Personal learning style < Home

As opposed to the traditional methods of teaching Sally Russell has developed an alternative model for understanding the differences between learners. The model identifies three broad categories of learning styles: visual, auditory and kinesthetic.

These are very similar to the types identified by Felder and Silverman, with the difference that auditory learners are not necessarily more receptive to written and verbal methods, but rather simply have a more developed auditory memory and are more sensitive to sounds. As a result, they are also more easily distracted by noise and silence. They require regular communication in order to retain a maximum from their lessons, and thus frequently participate in, and enjoy, class discussions.

Kinetic learners need a hands-on experience and physical stimulation and prefer activities which require building or manipulating. Visual learners are similar in this model to those in the Felder-Silverman model.

My personal problems, experienced in the course of my education originate from the fact that I was ill adapted to the methods of teaching. Having recently undertaken a test to evaluate my learning aptitudes and type, I have discovered that I have greater dispositions towards visual-type learning, rather than verbal-type learning. I had previously thought that I was a verbal learner with certain difficulties, thus the results of the test came as a surprise. This had a number of deleterious effects on my academic life.
